Hier varend bij Millers Points, New South Wales (Sydney), Australia omstreeks 1930.
In augustus 1940 werd het schip gecharterd door het British Ministry of War Transport (BMWT) en in Singapore tot troepentransportschip ingericht.
Het schip was in mei 1941 betrokken bij luchtaanvallen toen het troepen naar Kreta bracht.
Begin juli 1942 werd het schip door de Nederlandse regering gevorderd.
Op 11 november 1942 kwam het einde van de Nieuw Zeeland bij de operatie Torch. Onderweg van Algiers naar Gibraltar werd ze getorpedeerd door de Duitse onderzeeboot U 380, waarbij 16 opvarenden om het leven kwamen.
Het zusterschip Nieuw Holland (ook gebouwd in 1928 en in de 2e wereldoorlog ingericht als troepentransportschip) overleefde de oorlog wel en werd in 1959 in Hongkong gesloopt.

The tugs can be identified as the Dutch CYCLOP and POOLZEE on her head, with local Tyne tugs on the starboard quarter and her stern lines.
